Know your Big Blind from your Small Blind and your Bullets from your Gutshots. These are the poker terms you need to know to be successful. Take a few minutes, check them out, and then hit the tables at CarbonPoker.
To bet all of your chips in a hand. If the amount does not match the bet, a side pot is created. A player can only win from the pots he has contributed.
A term commonly used in stud poker when a player has an ace as one of their down cards.
The opportunity to act. Ie, The action is on me, implies it is my turn to bet, muck etc. (2) Reference to general play. Ie "This room has a lot of action"
A small portion of a bet given by each player to seed the pot of certain games. Most Holdem gamers use blinds for this.
To buy more chips before you bust. Many tournaments have addons. Is usually allowed only once at the end of the rebuy period.
Slang for the starting hand Ace Jack.
When an exceptionally good hand is beaten by another even better hand. Example quads 4's are trumped by quad 7's .
To put chips into the pot. Other players must call your bet, raise your bet, or fold to your bet.
The larger of the blinds. It is the first full round bet. The big blind still has the option to raise if they wish, providing it hasn't already been raised.

A forced bet put in by the two players left of the dealer before any cards are dealt.
When you make a bet without a winning hand in the hope that your opponents will fold to you.
A full house. Also known as a full boat
All the community cards in a holdem game - the flop, turn, and river cards together.
If a player consistently looses over a night and loses lots of their bankroll they are considered broken.
A pair with the lowest card on the flop. If you have As-6s, and the flop comes Kd-Th-6c, you have flopped bottom pair.
Pocket Aces
The best possible straight. From Ace to 10
To discard the card between each betting round. This is done to prevent any player seeing the coming card.
A small round disc used to represent the dealer position.
(1) As in "buy the pot." A big bet, forcing others to fold. Usually a bluff or semi bluff
An amount of money you pay to enter in to a tournament. There will also usually be a house fee involved.
To match the most recent bet or raise.
A player who does not lead the betting or raise often, but will always call others bets or raises.

To call a bet in the hopes of hitting a hand on the turn or river.
A cold call is a call made by a player after two players have already bet and raised the bet thus indicating they have good hands. A call implies your hand is just as good.
A player who is receiving cold cars is generally a player with some experience who is having a bad run due to bad cards.
Collusion is a form of cheating when two or more players are working together to gain some form of advantage.
The 5 cards are dealt face up on the table are referred to as community cards. All players can use them to make a hand.

The first pot created during a poker round.
Conversation that goes on between players in the chat window.
To not place a bet, all subsequent players will still have the option to check or bet.
To check and then raise when a player seated after you bets. A useful poker tactic.
When the two pocket cards are one rank apart, eg. 9,8

Said when you will lose even if you make your hand, ie if your drawing for a straight but your opponent already has a flush.

Your "rightful" share of a pot. If the pot contains $100, and you have a 1 in 4 chance of winning it, you have $25 equity in the pot.
EV In probability theory, the overall expected payoff of a particular event, calculated by multiplying the probability of each possible outcome by the payoff from each.
For example, if there are two possible outcomes from an event (say, flipping a coin), one of which pays $2 and the other of which pays nothing, your EV for the event is $1 (in the long run, if this event happened many times, you would average $1 per event.
In poker, one generally associates an EV with a particular action. One's EV from calling a bet, for example, is the sum of all possible outcomes from calling the bet multiplied by the probability of each.
Note that since a bet costs money to make, the payoff of some outcomes - and therefore the EV itself - may be negative.
A card whose face has been shown either through accident or deliberate action. Players are not usually entitled to this information in a game and various games have different rules about how to handle such a situation
A blind put in by a player who is just entering or returning to the game.
A pot in which all (or almost all) of the players call before the flop.
To play a hand aggressively, betting and raising as much as possible.
A player must fold if he does not wish to match the bet. A player should also fold if they do not think they can win the hand. You have the option to show both, show one, or to muck them without showing either.
A player of low skill, who practically give his money away.

The first three community cards, put out face up, all together.
When four cards of a suit are on the board it gives every player with one card of that suit a flush.
More commonly known as the turn. It is the 4th community card dealt.
A turn or river card that you do not have to pay to see because of everyone checking.
A type of tournament where it does not cost to enter, but pays out to the winners.
A winner-take-all tournament with no re-buys. That is, a game in which play continues until one player has all the chips.
A semi-professional player who makes a living out of playing poker.
An inside straight draw chance. Ie a player is holding 6,7,8,10 for a straight and need a 9.
A game where only two people are playing, or a pot that is only contested by two players as everyone else has folded out.
If in any given round of poker no player makes a hand of pairs or something better then the person with the highest card will win.
The casino or establishment that is putting the game on and running it.
The two cards dealt to each player at the start of a hand.
When a play places in a tournament where they will collect winnings they are said to have placed in the money.
When a player has 4 cards necessary for a straight but missing one on the interior.
A big cash pay out. Usually won in side games, but also in poker tournaments and with bad beats.

A 53rd Card used mainly in Draw Poker games. The Joker can be utilized as an ace or wild card to complete a straight or flush.
The unpaired card in your hand. Used to determine the best hand if two people have the same pairs.
A pool of money taken in small amounts from pots used to buy refreshments and such at home games.
When a player folds a good hand in a tough choice. Example: I had to laydown pocket King's because I thought they had AA.
Limit poker is when the game is played with betting limits. You can only bet as much as the limit allows for.
A player is said to limp in if does not bet but only calls the big blind to see a flop
when you are chasing and you hit on the turn or river taking down someone with a good hand.
Poker games with a really small limit. Could not be played in a real casino. Limits of less than .25 .50.
A pair made with one of your hole cards where there are under and over cards on the board. If you have a 7 as a hole card and the board flops 10 7 3 you are said to have middle pair.
In a full table situation middle position is the 4th 5th or 6th players to act. It is better than early position but not as good as late.
The lest amount of money you can buy into a game for.
Internet poker has games with very small limits such as 2c 4c blinds. These are referred to as micro limits.
The pile of folded and burn cards. Or to fold and add your cards to the pile.
A pot where several players are still playing, also known as a family pot.
A format of poker where there is no limit to the size bet a player can make.
When you almost have the best hand possible. You might have a full house and have the near nuts as someone may have four of a kind. But it is unlikely.
The Nuts is when you have the best hand and cannot be beaten.
A type of betting structure common to Holdem games. There are no betting limits and a player can go all in if they choose.
A holdem hand with two cards of different suits.
A card in your hand that is higher than any of those on the board.
Same as above, but a pocket pair.
When a player has 4 out of the 5 cards needed to make a straight and the cards that they have are the middle ones ie 6,7,8,9. Where they need a 10 or a 5 to complete it.
To call a bet when you have a strong hand, but suspect your opponent has an even stronger hand.
The two cards you are dealt.
When your two pocket card form a pair.
When you are forced to bet your remaining chips because of how much you have left, and what's in the pot.
A version of poker where you may bet up to what is in the pot.
The amount of money in the pot compared to the amount you must put in the pot to continue playing.
A bet by a player post flop when they did not lead the betting pre-flop. Used to probe and check others betting responses.
Four of a kind.
A flop that contains card from three different suits. Very little chance of a flush draw
An amount of money taken out of every pot for the house. This is their income.
When another player bets, you have the option of calling their bet, folding or increasing the bet which is called a raise.
Usually a reference to the flop when its all different suits.
A function in online poker where a player who wins a pot can play out the rest of the hand to see what might have happened.
The value of a card, as opposed to its suit.
Any worthless card that doesn't help your poker hand. Example "I'm holding Ace-rag."
An option that allows you to buy back into a tournament after you've already lost all your chips. Tournaments may offer one or more rebuys or (often) none at all.
To play as if you were holding a certain hand. Bluffing
A regular poker game as opposed to a tournament.
The fifth and final community card to be dealt. Commences the final round of betting.
A player who plays very conservatively, not very creatively.
An expert player who travels around to seek out high-stakes games
A card with a face on it. Also called picture cards. K, J, Q are the royal cards.
A tournament that does not award cash to its winners, but a seat (or seats) in a subsequent "target" tournament.
A pair with the second highest card on the flop.
It is a bet or raise that you hope will not be called, but you are holding something or have a chance at a good hand if it is called.
Three of a kind.
The point at which all players remaining in the hand turn their cards over and determine who has the best hand, after the final round of betting.
A professional player. Who likely makes a considerable amount from poker or wins a lot
A poker tournament format where the last remaining player at each table progresses on to play the remaining players of the other tables. Tables are not balanced as in a traditional poker tournament
A player who has a small amount of chips in comparison to the average. These plays are to be watched for as the short stack makes them more aggressive.
A poker game that is played with 6 or less players rather than the full table of 9 or 10
To simply call the bet rather than raise it.
To throw chips into the pot in a disruptive fashion.
A pot created on the side when a player has gone all in with out enough chips to call the placed bet.
To play a strong hand weakly so more players will stay in the hand and bet.
The smaller of two blind bets typically used in a holdem game.
A pot that is shared by two or more players because they have hands of equal value.
A play where you call (rather than re-raising) a raise, but then come out betting on the next card.
When a player is holding a straight with all cards belonging to the same suit. This is the best hand in Holdem poker.
When a player has a losing hand when they a call and then get the card they needed on the river to make a winning hand.
When your two pocket cards are of the same suit.
A hint or clue or piece of information a player gives through his actions or body language about the strength of his hand.
To play wildly or recklessly. A player is said to be "on tilt" if he is not playing his best. Often happens when affected by emotion
A pair with the highest card on the flop.
Three of a kind. Three cards of the same number.
The fourth community card to be dealt.
The position of the player who acts first on a betting round.
A person or hand not mathematically favoured to win a pot.
To increase the stake of the game that's being played.
A bet made by a player who wants the bet to be called.
A players bankroll will go through up and down swings, this is called variance. It is not a measure of how good the player is.
