imreHere is an update from one of our Australia correspondants. As you know, CarbonPoker was proud to send some online poker winners to the PokerNews Cup – Australia. Here’s what Shane in Melbourne has to report on the action from Day 1A:

With the Carbon team decimated by 2 late withdrawals there was only one runner on day 1A, impser.

After watching a fair chunk of his play today I have renamed impser “The stone faced Estonian”, he is a rock at the table giving nothing away in his demeanor. Hour after hour after hour he can’t be broken.

Through to the dinner break impser was just under the average stack, still well alive but not moving to far ahead.

With the blinds at 200/400 impser limps in from middle position only to have a know blind thief raise it up to 4k. Without blinking impser plonks down a stack of his biggest chips, roughly 20k. The original raiser went into the tank thinking long and hard before folding and showing pocket 8′s. The stoney faced impser didn’t show his hand, never giving away more information than he has to.

After hitting a low of 13k impser had a late rush in the last session of play and has survived day one and with 65k in chips he is just under the average of 69k with 49 players remaining in flight 1A.

So with a perfect 100% record from day 1A expectations will be high when flight 1B kicks off tomorrow!

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on all of impser’s action throughout the PokerNews Cup. GL, man.

wsopeUPDATE: Since time of writing, Negreanu has been powering through the event, and is now 2nd in chips.

The Final Table of the World Series of Poker Europe is set. There are some recognizable faces and dominant players.

The £10,000 buy-in event has been gaining steam and prestige over the last few years, and notable pros making the final table does wonders for the event’s credibility.

The Players:

Jason Mercier 3,198,000 Chips
James Akenhead 1,398,000 Chips
Praz Bansi 1,160,000 Chips
Barry Shulman 1,090,000 Chips
Markus Ristola 784,000 Chips
Antoine Saout 701,000 Chips
Matt Hawrilenko 674,000 Chips
Chris Bjorin 518,000 Chips
Daniel Negreanu 438,000 Chips

Saout is on an absolute tear this year. He is essentially in 2 final tables at once – the biggest final tables in poker.

The father/son poker prowess is strong in the Shulman family. With Barry (father) in the WSOPE final and Jeff (son) in the WSOP November Nine.

You really can’t count out a guy like Negreanu, when he’s in an event like this.

Updates to come soon.

Here is the payout structure:

£ 801,603
£ 495,589
£ 360,887
£ 267,267
£ 200,367
£ 150,267
£ 114,228
£ 87,074
£66,533

durrrrEarlier today, we looked at the potential inductees into the 2009 class of the Poker Hall of Fame. Here’s a poker notable that is not on that list.

Tom Dwan didn’t make the cut for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame inductions.

Apparently durrr was in the 10-man preliminary list, but has been omitted from the voting selection pool. After some more consideration, I think this is a little odd. Singling out durrrr is strange, because he probably wouldn’t have gotten the 75% of votes needed anyways because he hasn’t stood the test of time portion of the Hall’s criteria.

Equally interesting is the fact that he’s on the list to begin with. It really speaks to poker’s accessibility. If you can be in the conversation of Hall of Fame after some intense time in the spotlight (coming out of almost nowhere), it’s far from inconceivable for anyone to step up to that kind of level.

Truth be told, I like watching Dwan check-raise with 3-5 off suit into a $135,000 pot as much as the next guy, but does that equate Hall of Fame this early in his career? Well, as those involved have spoken, no.

Will Dwan eventually get into the Hall of Fame? Probably, yes. How’s that for a bold statement?

hellmuthPhil Hellmuth has announced that he will once again be joining the Taser Foundation for Fallen Officers in hosting the Hold’em for Heroes Celebrity Tournament.  This will be the 5th year for the tourney, and it is set to take place from November 19th to the 21st at Arizona’s Fort McDowell Casino.

So far $2.29 million has been raised for the families of fallen officers since the inception of the Hold’em for Heroes Celebrity Tournament in 2005.  Last year the event reached its peak after making $500,000 en route to becoming the most successful charity poker tournament in the United States.  The $500k was a big boost to the families of the 141 US and Canadian police officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2008.

Hellmuth summed up Hold’em for Heroes’ goals in a press release by stating, “Over the last several years, and especially since 9/11, my respect for policemen, firemen, and the people who protect us has risen higher and higher.  Our Hold’em for Heroes charity poker tournament gives money to the Fallen Officers Foundation, which supports officers and the families of officers who were killed in the line of duty.  My friends and I are grateful to these brave men and women and we are proud to help.”

Several other well known poker pros will be joining Hellmuth in hosting the event such as Layne Flack, Todd Brunson, Brandon Cantu, Antonio Esfandiari, Kenna James, Clonie Gowen, and Roy Winston.  In addition to these poker players, country singer Mark Willis will also join in the festivities as Phil Hellmuth’s co-host.

Three separate tournaments will run during the Heroes for Hold’em event including a $115 buy-in tourney, a $265 buy-in, and a $1,000 buy-in.  All of the tournaments will offer buy-ins and the top prizes in each tourney will be a $10,000 Main Event seat in the 2010 WSOP.

jamie-gold2006 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Jamie Gold and 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate will be hosting a unique charity tournament at Europe’s largest poker festival.

The event is called Poker in the Park, and will be held in London’s world-famous Leicester Square for a third straight year.  Gold and Eastgate’s charity tournament will headline Poker in the Park while poker lessons, heads-up games, and lectures from professional players will also be held during this poker extravaganza; Poker in the Park takes place on August 13th and 14th.

The buy-in for the tournament is ₤500 and all of the money made from the ₤500 will go to the Jamie Gold Foundation.  This Foundation covers numerous charitable organizations including the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Fallen Heroes Fund.

There is a 50 player cap on the tournament and top prize will be a ₤5,200 European Poker Tour prize package.

The main host, Jamie Gold, gained international poker fame after winning the 2006 WSOP Main Event.  The $12 million that Gold won in the 2006 Main Event gave him the world record for most live poker tournaments winnings; he still holds the record to this day.

Gold has also been involved in other charitable organizations and tournaments including Ante Up for Africa which is an annual event at the WSOP.  His other accolades include appearing on seasons 3 and 4 of High Stakes Poker and episodes of Poker After Dark as well.

Peter Eastgate earned worldwide recognition after capturing the 2008 Main Event title which earned him over $9.1 million.  At age 22, Eastgate also broke Phil Hellmuth’s record as the youngest person ever to win the WSOP Main Event.  Eastgate valiantly defended his 2008 title in the 2009 Main Event before busting out in 78th place.

moneymaker chrisThe World Poker Open Championship is not one of the most high profile tournaments in the world, but it is significant enough to attract some attention.  And the WPOC attracted extra attention this year since 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker jumped out to a huge chip lead heading into the final table.

Out of the 2.5 million chips that were in play, Moneymaker held over 1 million of them with fellow poker pro Chad Brown sitting well behind him in second with 433,000 chips.  Due to his large lead, many people were discussing the possibility of Moneymaker grabbing his first tournament win since taking the WSOP Main Event title back in ’03.

But 25 year-old player Jeremy Gaubert was able to make a big comeback and eventually bounce Chris Moneymaker from the tournament when Gaubert rivered a flush.  Moneymaker finished 3rd in the event and took home $60,110 for his efforts.

With Moneymaker gone, heads-up play came down to Gaubert (1.5 million chips) and Steve Hammontree (1 million chips).  The two played for about 75 minutes before Gaubert’s pocket aces held up as Hammontree got no help from the board when trying to improve his T-8 hand.

With the World Poker Open Championship title, Jeremy Gaubert earned his first big tournament victory along with $192,953; Hammontree earned $109,440 for taking second place.  Last year’s WPOC champion was noted female player Clonie Gowen who won $183,000; she did not return to defend her title in 2009.

Chris Moneymaker’s 3rd place finish in this tournament marked the biggest cash for him since he earned $200,000 for placing 2nd in the WPT Shooting Star event.  Since that cash, Moneymaker’s career had steadily declined with him failing to garner any more significant tournament finishes until the recent 3rd place showing at the WPOC.

coutureFor the second straight year, mixed martial arts star Randy Couture will be holding a charity poker tournament to help U.S. military veterans.  The tournament is called “Operation All In” and it will be held on August 22nd at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas.

Operation All In, which is staged by Couture’s Xtreme Couture G.I. foundation, will feature celebrity players and allow the public to join in on the action too.  Some of the celebrities involved include poker players Todd Brunson, Lee Watkinson, David Williams, Adam Schoenfeld, Chip Jett, and Robert Williamson III as well as MMA stars Dan Henderson, Frank Trigg, Phil Baroni, and Stephan Bonnar.

Those who wish to participate in Operation All In can buy into the tournament for $330 with $100 rebuys being offered too.  The first place prize in this tourney will be a $10,000 Main Event seat in the PokerNews Sports Legends Challenge which is held at Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

Randy Couture is extremely excited about the second annual Operation All In tournament and said, “We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back for our second annual charity event.  It’s sure to be an amazing time, while raising awareness and a lot of money for an unbelievable cause.”  The cause that Couture is referring will be helping wounded U.S. military veterans as well as their families.

Couture, who is a U.S. army veteran himself, expanded on the charitable cause of Operation All In by saying, “Having spent time in a uniform it became a personal goal of mine to find a way to give back to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces for the sacrifices they make defending our freedoms.  The Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation was born out of that desire.  We hope you’ll come join us for a great night and rub elbows with some of the best fighters and poker players on the planet all in the name of our troops.”
