Close out your weekend this Sunday, April 18th, with a heaping dose of heads-up action. The NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship returns at noon EST, with 64 of the biggest names in the game vying for a first place prize of $500,000 and the coveted championship trophy.
For viewers unfamiliar with NBC’s coverage, it is an invite-only who’s who of the card world that could have Barnum & Bailey’s sued for false advertising for calling themselves “the greatest show on earth.” This premier heads-up poker tourney is a single elimination bracket style, with a best-of-three final being played out to determine a winner. You will see some of the finest no-limit hold’em this side the Great Mississippi, sprinkled with announcer Ali Nejad’s mind-numbing banalities and the impressive flesh buoys of Leeann Tweeden.
The cards hit the felt Sunday for the Spades bracket of the tourney. Matches featured will include:
- Phil Ivey vs. Gavin Smith
- Scotty Nguyen vs. Richard Edwards
- Joe Hachem vs. Shawn Rice
- Gabe Kaplan vs. Johnny Chan
- Jason Mercier vs. Daniel Negreanu
- Pieter de Korver vs. Mike Sexton
- Phil Gordon vs. Tom Dwan
- Phil Laak vs. John Juanda
NBC’s coverage of this heads-up championship continues as follows:
April 18 — Noon – 1PM ET/9:00-10:00 AM PT
April 25 – Noon – 2PM ET/9:00-11:00AM PT

Nothing tests the true skill of a player more than a heads-up poker tournament. Here, there are no other fish to pick on (unless your opponent is one), no playing to the left of weaker players, and no checking and calling just to survive to the next round. You are one-on-one with your opponent, and you must beat that person to move on. So, in the spirit of you beating your heads-up adversary, let’s look at some tips for how to do so.
Tom Dwan has made a big name for himself in the poker world through his online exploits and bold challenges that he commonly issues. The latest challenge has him taking on a number of noted live poker pros in a Million Dollar Challenge being put on by Matchroom Sport in London. The first leg of the challenge had Dwan taking on Marcello “luckexpress” Marigliano.

The World Series Of Poker Europe isn’t all about tight hands and pressure betting, it turns out. Paul Zimbler proved that Thursday (or should I say on Tuesday through Thursday) by successfully breaking the world record for the longest recorded continuous poker session at London’s Casino at the Empire.
