aussie-millions-logoDay one was over nearly as quickly as it started at the Aussie Millions. No sooner had the AC/DC cover band finished their rendition of “Its a long way to the top” and Aussie Poker icon Joe Hachem gave the dealers the “shuffle up and deal” war cry and Carbon Poker’s lone entrant in the first flight was on his way to the smokers area cursing the big call that sent him out.

DADuhWEEwah caught some rough breaks early, his 2 pair ran into a higher two pair to start the day, and then things got worse. Closing in on the hour he saw a dream flop, holding J9 suited he caught and up and down straight draw with a QT4 flop in a four way pot with two spades. He immediately raised chasing away all but one lone caller. The turn brought an ace and he fired another bet and again got the call, a queen on the river saw him push his final 6k chips in the middle and again he got a call. His opponent flipped A7 of spades for top pair, a flushed draw chased a straight draw and caught a pair. Not quite what he had in mind for his trip down under.

Strangely this first shot at Aussie Millions glory hasn’t deterred DADuhWEEwah as he is already talking about coming back next year!

In non Carbon Poker news day 1 of the Aussie Millions saw quite a few of the big names strolling into the poker room. Dan Harrington was in early, Aussie Joe of course was there to start proceedings, Gus Hansen sat out the first level to get some PR time in, Barry Greenstein wandered in just in the nick of time and well after the first level was underway Eric Lindgren strolled into the room.

Straight from the floor – the biggest pot of the tournament so far, over 1.4 million in chips.

Player1 raises $100,000 preflop and is folded around the table to player2 who makes the call.

The flop comes Q38. #1 moves all in with the short stack, and player 2 stands and makes the call. Looking jubilantly triumphant already, he tables KK for the best hand with #1 flipping top pair – Queens and a 10 kicker.

Turn – 6
River – 9

The crowd applauds and cheers as the field narrows down to 30 odd players.

The action at the Main Event has been heating up as we got to the money yesterday a few sessions before dinner break. A period of extremely tight play ensued as players tried to make the bubble. However once it burst a flurry of all ins in quick succession happened as players with short stacks made their moves now that they were guaranteed at least $40,000 in chump change.

A few big moves by some big names fare poorly as crowd favorite Patrick Antonius fell to a 3 way all in on a board of JJ8-3-5. Some big bets forced one chaser off but not the other as he moved in for 400k. A long time deliberating, Antonius eventually and honorably called time on himself and as the pit boss counted down the final moments he made the call and tabled KJ for trip Jacks. His opponent turned J5 for one better with a full house.

Only a short while ago, a shout was heard across the floor as big name Scotty Nguyen moved all in. Here’s how the play went down…

KK in his hand he smooth calls a 12,000 raise and opts to milk the hand. A 483 rainbow flop gave him what appeared to be a sign that the smooth call was right, once again he smooth calls a bet by his opponent this time 20,000.

The 5 on the turn gave some straight draw options that could have been threatening. Following a check by his opponent he moves his remaining 14,500 in the middle to be called by a K4 which put him in best position with KK vs 44. A 4 on the river brought supporters hopes crashing down as he was bested by a set of 4s.

Dezilk had been having a good run in the first day of the Main Event, up above the average chip stack at times, and occasionally below. However his run ended in sudden tragedy when his stack was crippled in short order by tough play at a table littered with experienced poker faces.

Short stack and in early position, Dezilk had little choice but to push all in when he peered down at a peeled back Q5 suited. Having one caller on QJ, his luck didn’t look the best. However the flop came pairing his 5s, but not bringing any flush draw options. Either way, he looked in good shape. Until the turn came a queen and the river crushed all hope of survival by nailing a pair of fishhooks into his coffin. Dezilks under pair wasn’t enough and sent him over to Liam and Sliekas who were waiting with a chilled beer.

Its a tough crowd here in Melbourne as revered Carbon Player Sliekas found out. The triple live seat winner had his fishhooks cracked to see him leave disappointing early on in flight 3 of the main event.

Peering down at JJ Slieka’s raised preflop under the gun to be called by the button and small blind. The flop came down with what appeared to be well in favor of his cause – a rainbow 789. Over pair with a gutshot straight draw. Another bet and a call as the turn comes and changes nothing on the board, all in by Sliekas after to carry out a check call manoeuvre, a hesitation and then Slieka’s all in is called and the opponent turns a set of 8′s. Unlucky and Slieka’s is sent packing to the bar, where Liam waits with cold beer.

The first session of play has just ended with a 15 minute break from the felt. Crown Casinos Poker room was abuzz with the action of the day, but the poker for the Carbon Team was slow coming. After an early won pot by Vader46 who’s pocket 7′s came through against a low board an a calling stations Ace high, the action really slacked. Although Vader46 looked to be firing it up with 3 AK hands in relatively quick succession, all failed to hit and saw him dwindle somewhat.

In other news, the floor was sparkling as stars were spotted left right and again on the left. Lee Nelson, Mark Voss, Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne, sporting a new sleeve of tattoos, and vocalist Brian McFaden who’s better known for the women he pulls, were all seen cavorting around the poker room. Even a blinged up Scotty Nguyen managed to get roped into a photo with StaffLiam.

More Updates and Photos are coming soon!
