Patrik Antonius and Rui Cao playing $1 Million Challenge
Patrik Antonius and Rui Cao are two of the most famous high stakes poker players in the world. Antonius has earned $11.7 million in online poker profits, which ranks second all-time behind Phil Ivey. Cao has collected around $500k in profits over a career full of up and downswings. This being said, their $1 million challenge has been very entertaining up to this point..
As the name implies, each player is fronting $1 million for the challenge, and they’ll be dividing their bankroll up across three different poker games. $350,000 will be dedicated to Pot-Limit Omaha action, $350,000 is going to be used in the No-Limit Hold’em portion, and $300,000 was available for 2-7 Triple Draw.
The latter part of this challenge has already been completed, with Cao taking $300k off Antonius in the 2-7 Triple Draw session. At this point, it’s not completely clear when the grinders will continue the PLO and NLHE segments. But unlike the “Durrrr” challenges of the past, this one actually has a chance of finishing.
As for how Cao and Antonius decided to face off, it happened during a Triple Draw match that they were playing. The Finn won quite a bit of money off Cao, and they started discussing a potential challenge in the chat box. These two players worked out the specifics of their $1 million matchup and everything was set.
This is by no means a cordial and friendly affair because Cao and Antonius have a little bad blood between them. Angry over how much money Patrik was winning off him a couple of years ago, Rui told the poker world that Antonius wasn’t welcome in Macau high stakes games since he was such a “nit.” The Finn responded by saying that there was no basis to what Cao said and he was just mad about all the money he was losing.
That said, it will be pretty entertaining to see how the $1 million challenge turns out. Cao struck first with the $300k victory; however, there’s still plenty of poker left to be played.
