Getting Value from Three-Bets

stack-of-chipsThree-betting is one of the most basic pieces of poker strategy that players learn.  While most people think three-betting means making 3 raises in the same hand, it is really much simpler than this.  Three-betting is the act of making a re-raise after a bet and raise have already been made (the third bet is implied in the name).

Unfortunately, there are a lot of players who like to make three-bets just because it’s one of the more popular moves to make at the poker table.  However, any time you make a three-bet, you should make sure it’s done in order to get the best value out of a hand.

When making a value three-bet, you first need to believe that you’ve already got the best hand at the table.  After you’ve decided that you have the best hand then comes the difficult part – figuring out how much to bet into opponents on the re-raise.  Making this decision is simply a process of trying to decide what your opponent’s image is, what your perceived image is, and the dynamics of the table.

Raise too much and you’ll knock a tight player right out of the hand; raise too little against an aggressive player and you’re not getting enough value out of the hand.  Value three-betting can be a very delicate process, and you also need to know which hands to three-bet with.

When three-betting tight/aggressive players, you’ll want to stick with hands such as AA-JJ as well as AK.  The reason for this is that tight/aggressive players aren’t going to go far into a hand if they don’t have something good.  Likewise, with loose/aggressive players you’ll want to expand the range of hands you three-bet with to AA-99 and AK-AJ.  Loose/aggressive players don’t need the nuts to call your re-raise so you can get away with three-betting them while holding a broader range of cards.
