When poker pro Phil Ivey and his wife of seven years, Luciaetta Ivey, got divorced, people knew that Luciaetta was going to get her fair share of wealth. After all, Ivey has $13.8 million in live poker tournament winnings, close to $20 million in earnings from online poker cash games, and countless dollars from both live cash games and sponsorship deals. But it was hard to imagine the extent of what the former Mrs. Ivey would get when the case was decided.

Thanks to new details published by the Las Vegas Review Journal, we now know exactly how much of the vast fortune that Luciaetta Ivey got from the divorce settlement. Highlights include $2.2 million in jewelry and purses, a $180,000 alimony payment each month, a life insurance policy, a house down payment, 40% of a stock account, and 40% of business payments to Phil Ivey (except for Tiltware LLC payouts). Furthermore, she didn’t have to assume any of Phil’s massive $15.1 million gambling bills and other debt.

But lately, the $180k alimony payments have been missing from the settlement because of a clause that relieves Phil of paying this if he’s no longer getting money from Tiltware. So Luciaetta has taken the case back to court because the former judge involved with the case – Bill Gonzalez – received $5k in campaign contributions from Phil Ivey. She spoke about these revalations last month by saying, “I was blindsided. I was very upset. I was very disgusted.”

At the moment, it doesn’t look like the case is going to be reopened because the Supreme Court where Luciaetta filed her petition said she, “sought to reopen the divorce case because she wasted all her money.” Going further, Phil’s lawyers chimed in with their take on the Judge Bill Gonzalez matter by saying, “At the time of the contributions, Judge Gonzalez no longer had jurisdiction over the case because it was closed.”

The World Poker Tour added a new hottie to its crew after signing Marianela Pereyra to serve as a hostess. The WPT needs somebody to fill in for current hostess Kimberly Lansing, who will be taking maternity leave, and they selected Pereyra after she “set herself apart with her endless enthusiasm, quick wit and extensive poker knowledge.” The Argentinian beauty will begin her new job at WPT Venice, which runs from February 6th-11th.

Adam Pliska, who is the WPT President, talked about the hiring of Pereyra by saying, “The innovative position of WPT Anchor is integral to the World Poker Tour, and Kimberly Lansing has done a fantastic job establishing this role. Marianela has impressive experience in the poker community and we know she’ll fit right in with the WPT family.”

Pereyra also commented on becoming the next WPT hostess by saying, “I’m thrilled to be given such an incredible opportunity. It’s an honor to be filling in for Kimberly Lansing and I’m really looking forward to being a part of the World Poker Tour.”

This is by no means her first trip in front of camera because Pereyra has had a number of TV hostess jobs, including her Poker After Dark stint in Season 3. In addition to Poker After Dark, she’s also done work for the WSOP, ESPN, FOX, CBS and Fuse TV. The Fuse TV job was especially notable because Pereyra hosted Daily Download, which gained her considerable mainstream fame. Following the show’s cancellation, she picked up her first poker hosting job with Poker After Dark.

If you’d like to read more on the story of Pereyra’s hiring, check out the WPT Blog.

To get started on your way towards double VIP points, you need to visit your Player Admin section and choose the “Activate Promo” button. After you’ve activated this promotion, you need to play in MTT’s and SNG’s on Mondays and Tuesdays from 00:00 to 23:59 (server time).

Assuming you do take advantage of double VIP points, you’ll be able to enter the added-value poker tournaments that Carbon is running much quicker (requires 250 VIP points to play). Speaking of these tournaments, Carbon is adding $1,000 to the prize pools of four tourneys this month, and here is a look at the schedule:

December 17th – $5 + $0.50 buy-in (earn at least 250 VIP points)
December 24th – $2 + $0.20 buy-in (earn at least 250 VIP points)
December 25th – $1 + $0.10 buy-in (earn at least 250 VIP points)

Carbon Poker is doing their part to make this holiday season a little bit better by adding a collective $5,000 to December poker tournament prize pools. The added $5k will be split into five equal $1,000 amounts, and the tourney buy-ins will range from $1 + $.10 to $10 + $1.

Those who want to participate in these added value poker tournaments need to earn 250 VIP points at some point in December, and pay the buy-in. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to play in the following tournaments:

December 10th – $10 + $1 buy-in, earn at least 250 VIP Points
December 17th – $5 + $0.50 buy-in, earn at least 250 VIP Points
December 24th – $2 + $0.20 buy-in, earn at least 250 VIP Points
December 25th – $1 + $0.10 buy-in, earn at least 250 VIP Points
December 31st – $1 + $0.10 buy-in, earn at least 250 VIP Points

As you can see, the December 10th added value poker tournament has already past, but there are still four other tourneys where $1,000 will be added to the prize pool. And they’re all at least several days away, so you have plenty of time to earn the required 250 VIP points to play.

It’s also worth mentioning that the extra $1k should offer a ton of added value to these poker tournaments since the buy-ins are so low. For example, let’s say you play in one of the $1 + $0.10 tournaments; even if 2,000 people bought in ($2K total), Carbon Poker would be matching 50% of the prize pool with their added $1,000, which really adds a lot of equity for players!

So if you’re looking to get the most out of your tournament buy-ins this December, play at Carbon Poker.

For years, the general population has stressed the importance of higher education over games of chance like poker. However, some people might rethink their position after reading a recent article on the Forbes website entitled “Why Poker Is Better Than Business School.”

The article starts off by stating that the average business school is going to set people back around $100,000, while it only costs poker beginners $3 for a pack of Bicycle cards. Actually your first online poker deposit is going to cost a little more than this, but the point is still well made, and one that Forbes writer Jeff Bercovici thinks people should seriously ponder.

Bercovici also sat down with Peter Alson, who’s the president of the United States Poker Federation, to back this point up in a video interview. One of the best quotes from Bercovici’s chat with Alson was when the U.S.P.F. president said the following when asked if poker was better than business school:

I am not a business man myself, but I know that all the businessmen I know who play poker would say that they actually learned more from playing poker than they did from business school because the game itself plays out like business in terms of how you can read your competitors, and assess their relative strengths and weaknesses – and take advantage of them. All of these things poker teaches in ways that business school can’t.

As an experienced poker player, you’re probably not going to learn much in the way of poker strategy from this video, but it’s definitely good for the general public to see clips like this. After all, some non-poker players have a negative perception of the game, and don’t really think that it can be beaten.

In the months following Black Friday, several poker TV shows got the axe since they lost key sponsors. However, one show that appeared destined to return was High Stakes Poker after the Game Show Network announced it would be back on. Unfortunately, it looks like GSN has changed their minds since High Stakes Poker is not on the early 2012 lineup.

As of January 2nd, 2012, the formerly-popular poker show will be off GSN and looking for a new home. The Chuck Woolery-hosted game show “Lingo” will take HSP’s old time slot, which is 3:00 am ET on Saturday mornings.

High Stakes Poker is arguably the most successful poker TV show in history since it lasted for a full seven seasons. The program commonly featured some of the top poker pros in the world such as Patrik Antonius, Jason Mercier, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein and Tom Dwan.

HSP programmers made some interesting moves over the show’s history, which included breaking up the popular commentating duo of Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza; hostess Kara Scott was brought in to replace Benza in Season 6. Despite initial protests, the move didn’t turn out too badly as Scott did a commendable job in her two seasons of work.

The second big change, which involved replacing Kaplan with comedian Norm Macdonald in Season 7, didn’t work out quite so well. It was clear that Macdonald wasn’t nearly as well-versed in poker terminology as Kaplan, and his dry sense of humor often misfired with the audience.

Macdonald’s presence on the show turned a fair share of viewers off, and months later, GSN has apparently chose to part ways with the poker show. This leaves the possibility open that another network/sponsor could step in and revive the show, but don’t hold your breath.

Every year the Aussie Millions offers one of the biggest poker tournament prize pools in the world. And last year, retiree/amateur poker player David Gorr earned $1.98 million for winning the Aussie Millions Main Event, and there was a $7.1 million collective prize pool up for grabs.

Nothing looks to change this year as we move closer towards the 2012 Aussie Millions, which is sure to once again offer a large fortune. So if you’re looking to win a life-changing sum of money, perhaps you should consider the Aussie Millions satellites that Carbon Poker is currently running.

These satellites will enable players to work towards Aussie Millions prize packages that cover their A$10,000 + $A$600 Main Event buy-in along with hotel and travel costs. What’s especially nice is that many of the satellites are very affordable with buy-ins as low as $1.10. Assuming you’re interested in playing in Carbon Poker’s Aussie Millions satellites, you can go to the lobby, click on the Tournaments tab, then choose the Satellites tab; once you’ve done this, the available satellites will be displayed.

Here is a look at some of the satellites that are currently being offered in the lobby (all tournaments are No Limit Hold’em):

$1.10 Aussie Millions Rebuy – Top 2 players advance to $60 Aussie Millions satellite.

$5.50 Aussie Millions Rebuy – One $550 Aussie Millions main satellite entry guaranteed.

$33 Aussie Millions Rebuy – One $550 Aussie Millions main satellite seat guaranteed.

$550 Aussie Millions Main Satellite – One Aussie Millions prize package guaranteed.

One of the biggest poker stories of 2011 is the high stakes poker lawsuit that involves both movie stars and professional athletes like  Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck, Alex Rodriguez, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The lawsuit arose because shamed hedge fund manager Brad Ruderman stole clients’ money, and lost almost $25 million playing against the aforementioned stars. In doing so, the jailed Ruderman left behind an angry trail of people who want their money back.

In all, 22 people who won money in the poker games were targeted in a lawsuit leveled by the investors, which included Tobey Maguire who was on the hook for $311k. What’s particularly notable about Maguire is that he recently settled with the investors for $80k.

Howard Ehrenberg, who led the Hollywood home poker games lawsuit, talked about how Maguire wasn’t trying to get a better deal than others involved in the suit as he said, “He did not end up with any better settlement than the others.” However, Tobey Maguire didn’t exactly think he was guilty of anything, and released a statement claiming he “strongly disputes that he violated any laws, rules or regulations in regard to participating in the poker games.”

With all of the rich playboys involved in this case, it’s likely that every one will agree to a lower settlement amount just to get out of the lawsuit. Apparently, over half of those being sued have already reached a settlement with Ehrenberg and the others.

This case certainly brings up a big debate about whether any of the Hollywood stars can truly be held accountable for the money that Ruderman stole and lost playing poker. Some people will claim that the players engaged in “illegal poker games,” but there’s nothing wrong with people getting together for home poker games in the US as long as rake isn’t being taken.

There are plenty of big cash games around the world where pots reach ridiculous amounts, and the players bring bankrolls worth more than you or I will ever see in our lifetime. However, it’s a stretch to say that any of these games can come close to the kind of money that’s involved in the current Macau high stakes poker games. In fact, there are already some pretty legendary stories coming out of these games right now.

The first story to come out of these insane high stakes poker games was that Tom Dwan had lost $2.6 million in a single session. Chinese high stakes grinder Peter Chan spilled this information to Phil Galfond in an online conversation that read as “hi sweets (Gallfond) you best friend lose in macau lose a lot of money….tom dwan. tom dwan lose 20 million hk ($2.6 million).” This story goes nicely along with the rumorered $11 million Macau pot that Dwan won early in 2011.

The second big story involves the return of Phil Ivey to civilization. Ivey has taken quite a bit of time off of playing live poker, and hadn’t been spotted for a while until recently venturing to Macau. So far there’s no word on how Ivey’s done on the high stakes cash tables, but he did play the APPT Macau tournament on the side.

Finally, Andrew Robl definitely made some noise after sending a tweet about how he won $2 million, then lost it all later. He tweeted, “Been gambling big in Maccau. Won 2 million USD straight and was very thankful. Now lost 2 million straight. Thankful for other things.”

Robl and other pros such as Ivey, Dwan, Sam Trickett, Cirque Du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté and Johnny Chan have gathered in Macau amid rumors that major high stakes games were going on there. Obviously the rumors were true, and we can only expect to hear more big stories arise out of these games in the future.

As Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving holiday, it’s worth mentioning that people can get fat on more than just turkey today. That’s because Carbon Poker is running some excellent promotions right now including 2X VIP Points, Fat & Slim Stack tourneys, and the $20,000 Tourney King. Here is a look at each one of these Carbon Poker promotions in-depth:

2X VIP Points - One of the most popular promotions that Carbon Poker has ran in November is the 2X VIP Points promo. With this deal, poker players can earn double VIP points by playing MTT’s and SNG’s on Monday and Tuesday in November. Seeing as how there’s only one week left in November, make sure to play poker this coming Monday and Tuesday so that you can get the double points. And don’t forget that you can buy into poker tournaments, purchase merchandise from the Carbon Poker store, and get real money with your VIP points.

Fat & Slim Stack Tourneys - This month was very exciting for Carbon Poker players since Fat & Slim Stack tournaments were unveiled on Fridays. With Fat Stack tournaments, you get a starting chip stack of $1 million, and the blinds levels move up rather slowly at every 10 minutes (levels start at 25k/50k). As for Slim Stack tournaments, you only get 10 chips to start with, and the blind levels go up every 2 minutes (levels start at 0.5/1).

$20k Tourney King - Regulars at Carbon Poker are quite familiar with the Tourney King promotion since this leaderboard promo runs every month, and awards $20,000 total to both a High Limit and Low Limit Leaderboard. All you need to do to move up the Tourney King ranks is earn VIP points throughout the month by playing real money cash games and poker tournaments. The winner of the High Limit Leaderboard receives $3,000, while the Low Limit Leaderboard winners gets $1,800.
