binions-las-vegasWhile Harrah’s Entertainment may have taken over the World Series of Poker brand name, much of the WSOP’s history will always be tied to Binion’s.  That’s because Binion’s owned and operated the WSOP for 36 years until the event was sold to Harrah’s Entertainment in 2005.  But just recently, the WSOP’s birthplace has announced that it will be closing its doors.

TLC Enterprises, which owns Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel in Las Vegas, made the decision to close down the aging casino after some recent financial trouble.  Company spokeswoman Lisa Robinson told reporters that Binion’s hotel rooms just weren’t pulling in enough money to remain competitive in the market.  However, she also mentioned that TLC Enterprises hopes to reopen Binion’s doors in the future.

The company will keep the casino, poker room, steakhouse, and sports book open to visitors, but they have closed down the hotel, coffee shop, and keno parlor for an indefinite amount of time.  In addition to closing several areas of Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel, TLC Enterprises will get rid of 100 out of their 800 employees.

The recent closure of several Binion’s areas is the result of financial problems which date back to 1998, when Benny Binion’s daughter, Becky Behnen, acquired the business.  The hotel and casino was eventually closed in 2004 when US marshals seized money to give to Binion’s employees.  Harrah’s bailed the company out when they bought Binion’s and the WSOP; they later sold Binion’s to the MTR Gaming Group.

After the closure of Binion’s facilities, many poker personalities were disappointed such as WSOP tournament director Matt Savage.  Savage reminisced via Twitter by writing, “Binions Horseshoe was both hated and loved by poker players over the years, but it is definitely missed by those that played the WSOP there!”  The current Binion’s poker room has 10 tables, according to the casino’s website, and 11 televisions.  It’s well-known for its Gallery of Champions, which portrays the history of the 40 year-old WSOP.”

There is no word on the immediate future of Binion’s as of now.  However, people will still be able to play poker there in the meantime.

Sit and go tournaments begin when enough players have filled the table.  So in order to get into the short-handed portion of a sit and go, you have to be able to survive several eliminations.  But once you’re there, the short-handed part of a sit and go (5 players or less) plays out much differently.  That’s why you need to keep a couple of things in mind when you survive this far into a sit and go.

Push or Fold

The early blinds in sit and go’s allow players to see the flop quite often.  However, once you get into the later stages, you’ll rarely be seeing the flop so your main options are either going to be push or fold.  By going all-in, you’ll be able to take advantage of the limpers, and gain an advantage over everyone who is playing scared.

Now some players might think it’s a better idea to try and sneak into the money.  But the problem with this is that there’s no guarantee you’ll sneak into anything due to the increasing blinds.  Plus there’s a good chance you will be short-stacked by this point, and pushing is much more favorable than being blinded out.  Stealing blinds and small pots is a must at this point!

When to Call

As mentioned before, it’s mainly push or fold in short-handed sit and go play.  However, this all or nothing approach doesn’t always fly, and there will be situations when you need to call.  Most of these situations arise when you are the big stack because you’re already in the driver’s seat at this point.

With the big stack, you have a lot more freedom than the other players left so you don’t need to blow a bunch of chips on one hand.  If you’re in this fortunate position, only get involved in huge pots when you know you’re a favorite and are getting correct odds.

Turkey Grand SlamNovember has come and gone. The turkey was stuffed, leftovers have been pillaged and football was watched.

There’s just one more thing to do before we fully dive into December: play the Turkey Grand Slam.

This Saturday, December 5th, the top 128 players on the Turkey Grand Slam Leaderboard will face off in a unique starting stack heads up tournament. The best part? The jackpot is going to weigh in at a hefty $28,995. Over $28K was built up over the month from a meager seed of $2,500 from CarbonPoker.

As you know, half the funds from the special Turkey SnGs kept building up this massive total. Nicely done, guys.

Congrats to the top 5 finishers in the Leaderboard. They’re definitely favorites to win, but it a tourney like this, anything can happen.

1 LTUFlawless  301,900
2 mazokie  288,336
3 Ebener2012  208,742
4 UShdFold9  157,330
5 scidles23  138,900

Keep your eyes peeled for December’s great promo! More to come from CarbonPoker
