angel-guillenMexico’s own Angel Guillen won his country’s second ever World Series of Poker bracelet in the $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em Event #32. It wasn’t an easy process.

The field started out with 1,500+ players, with 171 finishing in the money. The third and final day brought back 19 of them for a shot at the $2,791,880 prize pool.

Guillen went heads up with Finnish phenom Mike Paasonen to close out the event. The final pairing went for over five hours as pots went back and forth.

“I feel very fortunate to have the support of my family, my friends and all the people that supported me,” said Guillen after the win.

Guillen came out on top to win $530,548 and the gold bracelet. Only 10 days ago, Angel finished second in the $2,500 No-Limit Texas Hold’em event for $312,800. 2009 has been his best year of poker with this amazing month.

Paasonen has also been on a tear; this was his third cash of the 2009 World Series of Poker.

stack-of-chipsThree-betting is one of the most basic pieces of poker strategy that players learn.  While most people think three-betting means making 3 raises in the same hand, it is really much simpler than this.  Three-betting is the act of making a re-raise after a bet and raise have already been made (the third bet is implied in the name).

Unfortunately, there are a lot of players who like to make three-bets just because it’s one of the more popular moves to make at the poker table.  However, any time you make a three-bet, you should make sure it’s done in order to get the best value out of a hand.

When making a value three-bet, you first need to believe that you’ve already got the best hand at the table.  After you’ve decided that you have the best hand then comes the difficult part – figuring out how much to bet into opponents on the re-raise.  Making this decision is simply a process of trying to decide what your opponent’s image is, what your perceived image is, and the dynamics of the table.

Raise too much and you’ll knock a tight player right out of the hand; raise too little against an aggressive player and you’re not getting enough value out of the hand.  Value three-betting can be a very delicate process, and you also need to know which hands to three-bet with.

When three-betting tight/aggressive players, you’ll want to stick with hands such as AA-JJ as well as AK.  The reason for this is that tight/aggressive players aren’t going to go far into a hand if they don’t have something good.  Likewise, with loose/aggressive players you’ll want to expand the range of hands you three-bet with to AA-99 and AK-AJ.  Loose/aggressive players don’t need the nuts to call your re-raise so you can get away with three-betting them while holding a broader range of cards.

First time bracelet winner, James Van Alstyne, overcame the field during the 12-hour Day 3 of Event #31 ($1,500 HORSE) to win $247,033. This was his sixth final table at the World Series of Poker – second this year.

Van Alstyne held a major chip lead of 2.45Million to Tad Jurgens’ 980K going into heads up poker. He expectedly took care of business. The win puts JVA into a third place tie with Brock Parker for WSOP Player of the Year.

As a well-rounded player, Van Alstyne has been playing solid poker. As you’ll remember, he finished second in the $3,000 buy in of HORSE. Will this translate into success in the $50,000? Only time will tell.

I’m usually pretty up to date, but this poker movie slipped by me, luckily. Deal was a 2008 bomb that should have folded before the flop.

This is more of a public service announcement than a blog post.

Starring Bret Harrison and Burt Reynold’s moustache, Deal looks like a pretty watered down high stakes poker movie. Expect it to be complete with card-playing montages, a successful build up, inevitable crash and then redemption. Spoiler alert, right?

The movie features a poker babe (Shannon Elizabeth) and all of the poker/Vegas clichés you could hope for. WHOA! A fly over shot of Vegas? The fountain in front of the Bellagio? All-in metaphors? You bet you’re a$$, kids.

This steaming pile gets a whopping 3% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes…ouch.

Here’s the trailer, which is essentially the entire movie. You’re welcome; I just saved you two hours. Can you think of a worse poker film?

beerThere are a few things that you just don’t mess with: mucked poker hands, somebody’s sister (when they’re around), and beer.

A casino in Atlantic City was just hit with a $5K fine for running the same beer into “Miller Lite” and “Miller Genuine Draft” kegs. For shame, Resorts Atlantic City. For shame.

This isn’t the first time that the casino did this either. Back in August, they had similar complaints over a Coors and Coors Lite.

Really? I don’t even understand how this could benefit the casino. Is it a scheme to get more carbs into their players? I’m a little lost here. Furthermore, how did anyone even catch this? As far as I’m concerned, the difference between Piss and Piss Lite is pretty negligible.

jc-tranIn a field of 436 players, JC Tran took down his second World Series of Poker bracelet. He did it in pretty awesome fashion, as Event #30 was a tough battle.
Ross Boatman entered the final day with a sizable chip lead, and Tran was back in fourth.

JC was a dominant force in the event. Of the eight players left at the final table, Tran sent five to rails himself. That’s really getting it done. The final pairing, with Jeff Kimber was over within 60minutes. There were major swings within the first few hands – all of them in Tran’s favor.

The $2,500 buy in for PLO formed a prize pool of over $1Million.  Tran’s win was his 28th cash at the WSOP. That impressive number comes with eight final tables, the two gold bracelets and $1,653,992. What a consistent performer.

He may be wearing a Yankees hat, but I’m sure he’s still an OK guy.

Event 28 of the World Series of Poker wrapped up with Mike Eise proving his No-Limit skill with utterly superior play.

Eise not only progressed through the event, but was on a mission – knocking out more than a handful of players early on.

27 players entered the third and final day of the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event with the hopes of winning $639,331 and the bracelet.

Eise was the final table chip leader, went into heads up play with almost five times the chips as Jeff Chang. Mike was a truly dominant champion and deserved the $600k+. Congrats on the first bracelet.

This might have been one of the most aggressive and complete victories so far in the 2009 WSOP.

leonardo-di-caprioI hope this happens.  Mega-star, Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in a new film based on the world of online gambling.

The yet-to-be-titled project will be set in Costa Rica, but the rest of the details are a little tough to find right now.

What we do know is that Brian Koppelman and David Levien (writers of Ocean’s Thirteen & Rounders) are attached to write the script. If their previous work is any indication, I expect it to make gambling and online poker look awesome – which it is.

We’re all interested in seeing the portrayal of how this is going to look.

Let me know what you think it’s going to be like. We’re making a lot of guesses around the office.

We’ll keep you posted on any new developments
