If James Bond were hosting a poker tournament it may look like the World Series of Poker Europe – the words that WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack used to describe the Worlds Series of Poker Europe certainly held up at the 2008 WSOPE with the cream of the crop turning out for the Main Event. Pros filled the 362 man field, bringing with them the best of the action on offer.

Daniel Negreanu managed to form a substantial chip lead by the end of day 2 sitting tidy on 154,000. Picking up a big win early on with an excellent read – Lars Hougaard raised Negreanu on a flop of 9,8,6 with Negreanu re-raising enough to force him all in.

Negreanu commented “You have a pair and a straight draw? Okay, so you hit your miracle flop and have to fold?”, to which Hougaard responded, “Seems like it”, as he did just that.

Other noticeable bust outs were Gus Haansen and Juan Carlos Mortensen. The action continues tomorrow with a field of 97 playing on.

Congratulations to all who placed well in the Live Seat Grand Final, and extra congratulations must go to the three seat winners – Sliekas, gunnner7 and 2fast443allin. Sliekas, your off to the Aussie Millions in January with a task of winning the $10,000 main event. Gunnner and 2fast, a little less pressure youve both got entry into the $2000 main event at the Poker News Cup to be held in little under a month at Melbourne’s famed Crown Casino.

The Live Seat Grand final was a considerable success with 127 loyal poker players showing up and creating a prize pool over $30,000. Running for a lengthy four and a half hours, there was both periods of intense action and some chilled hands mixed in.

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves and all of you who managed to pick up the minor cash prizes enjoy them too.

Best of luck, till next time.

US Congressman Barney Frank’s second attempt at bringing some clarification and restriction to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has gone considerably better than his first. The new bill from Frank managed to pass its first hurdle; a vote by the Financial Services Committee. Next step in the process is to go to the house floor for open discussion. The UIGEA is an act that prohibits unlawful online gambling which includes all poker, sportsbetting and casino games. The problem with the issue is first – it blatanlty fails to define what even constitutes unlawful gambling, and secondly forces the countries banking system to be used as law enforcement.

The big argument speadheaded by the Poker Players Alliance is that Poker is not unlawful gambling as it is a game based upon skill not just odds. Former Senator Alfonse D’Amato and Poker Players Alliance chairman commented on on the motion saying, “The PPA is pleased that the House Financial Services Committee today recognized the need to provide necessary clarification to what constitutes ‘unlawful internet gambling’. Good news for all you US players!

I got sent an interesting article authored by Daniel ‘kid Poker’ Negreanu the other day.
Titled Top players have advantage in deep-stack games, the article argued that many players fail to take into consideration the difference in preflop play in deepstack trounaments compared to small ball poker.

Small ball poker he defines as characterized by low preflop raises and restrained betting on the flop, which is a large portion of the action that is played on Carbon. Arguing that deep stack cash games should invoke a different preflop strategy such as increasing both the size of preflop raises and the size of bets on the flop. Its a good read and i recommend it to every player on this site. Check it out here

Another article I had the chance to read was on Pokernews about Poker and Pop Culture. The first in a series of columns that will look at the ever-changing position poker has occupied in American popular culture, the article details the origins of highstakes poker back to the infamous game between pro Johnny Moss and banking tycoon Nick Dandalos at Binions Horseshoe in 1951.

Binions was the first casino to raise the stakes of many games. When other houses were offering a max limit of $50 for craps, Binions set it at $500. The game articualtley positioned near the casino entrance drew hundreds of spectators and its argued to have an impact lasting several decades. Not really that astounding when some of the pots were reaching half a million dollars.

Remember those games at your high school fair where they had the massive jars full of jelly beans and you had to guess how many were in it and the closest guess won? Well we’re taking a page out of whoever wrote that book and doing the same thing. However we don’t have a massive jar full of jelly beans…what we do have on the other hand is a massive Bad Beat jackpot.

To introduce our foray into the world of social networking we are holding a competition similar to the jar of jelly beans. On our newly created facebook page – located here, there is a competition where you can try and guess the amount at which the bad beat goes off. If you win, you get credited with $100 into your player account no strings attached. So go to the facebook page and become a fan, (I know you have it! Dont act like your too cool for social networking sites!!!) and have a crack at the Bad Beat Jackpot competition.

The poker calendar is lighting up with a number of smaller tournaments lately. Macau has come and gone; twice now to be exact but Cannes is where its at. The Partouche Poker Tour Main Event day 3 took place yesterday and the smaller event did not deter the pros with superstars Gus Hansen & Scotty Nguyen amongst the big names turning out to enjoy the south of France.
Day 3 produced some lively poker despite running into the late hours of the morning. Play of the day has to go to Hansen who miraculously busted out just short of the final table. Stephane Bazin raised pre-flop and Hansen followed with a substantial reraise, Bazin forced his stack and push all in putting the pressure back on Hansen. Not one to back down Hansen took his time and debated the call openly with Bazin and other table members before finally declaring; “I have a piece of sh*t… but I think you have a piece of sh*t, too,” as he made the call.

Bazin tabled AK to Hansen’s A6 suited.
The flop: 3 5 Q – mixed suits – no help to Hansen
The Turn: 8
The River: A

With no possible flush, the hand crippled Hansen who moved all in with his remaining chips next hand with the A6 suited only to run up against AQ, not catching any luck Hansen joined fellow pros Scotty Nguyen and Noah Schwartz in the stands.
